FC Cincinnati midfielder Leonardo Bertone’s sensational goal in FC Cincinnati’s first-ever MLS match at Seattle on March 2 has been voted FC Cincinnati’s Goal of the Year following a weeklong contest held at fccincinnati.com. Bertone’s goal claimed 59% of the vote to top Allan Cruz’s backheeled finish against the Portland Timbers on March 17. A total of 16 goals were chosen to face off in the bracket-style competition, which culminated in the two finalists squaring off on Friday, Nov. 8.
Opening the season against the eventual 2019 MLS Cup Champions, FC Cincinnati stunned the CenturyLink Field audience when Leo Bertone fired a right-footed, volleyed shot from outside the 18-yard box, beyond a diving Stefan Frei to give the visitors their first lead of the season. The Orange and Blue lost the season-opening match, 4-1, however, Bertone’s strike was quickly cemented as one of MLS’ top goals of the season and was one of 16 nominees for 2019 AT&T MLS Goal of the Year.
Bertone, 25, made 25 appearances, including 22 starts, scored one goal and added two assists for the Orange and Blue in the club’s first MLS season. Prior to joining FC Cincinnati, Bertone played the entirety of his professional career with Young Boys in his native Switzerland.
