CINCINNATI – FC Cincinnati have signed goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer from Major League Soccer’s Waiver List. FCC have signed Vermeer to a guaranteed contract through 2022. Vermeer, 35, will occupy an international roster spot and has been added to FC Cincinnati’s 2021 MLS roster.
“We are always looking for opportunities to improve our roster and believe Kenneth brings quality and leadership to our team,” FC Cincinnati General Manager Gerard Nijkamp said. “He has experienced success throughout his career and we feel this is a good addition to our roster. We are happy to have Kenneth in Cincinnati and look forward to him integrating within our team quickly.”
In order to create available senior roster and international roster spots for Vermeer, the club has correspondingly placed defender Maikel van der Werff on the Injured List. The defender will be eligible to return to FC Cincinnati’s active roster for the July 3 match at Houston.
Vermeer made 15 starts in net across all competitions for LAFC in the 2020 campaign. In eight MLS regular season starts, Vermeer posted a 2-3-3 record, made 20 saves and earned one shutout.
In his career, the goalkeeper has made 323 career appearances, including 320 starts, totaling 99 shutouts across all competitions in 16 professional seasons in the Netherlands, Belgium and United States. Prior to joining FC Cincinnati, Vermeer played for AFC Ajax (2005-14), Willem II (2007-08), Feyenoord (2014-20), Club Brugge (2018) and LAFC (2020).
Following a bye week, FC Cincinnati will officially open their 2021 home slate on Sunday, May 16, when the team hosts Inter Miami CF in the inaugural match at TQL Stadium in a nationally televised 4 p.m. game.
