The FC Cincinnati Academy spent the weekend in Toronto, Ontario playing in the regional qualifying phase for the Generation adidas Cup. The Under-17’s returned home with one point after losing in penalty kicks to New York City FC after a 1-1 draw, falling to Toronto FC 3-0 and a dropping a close game to Atlanta United FC 2-1. The Under-15’s collected three points during the trip. The U-15’s dropped their first game 2-1 against New York City FC, defeated in-state rival Columbus Crew SC 2-1, and lost their final game of the trip 2-1 against Orlando City SC.

New York City FC got on the scoresheet in the first minute of play after capitalizing on a FC Cincinnati miscue. As Cincinnati’s backline tried to play out from their defensive third, Brian Contreras intercepted the ball inside the penalty box and slipped the ball through to give New York City the lead. NYCFC kept their foot on the pedal, forcing Beckham Sunderland (Cincinnati, Ohio) to make a couple of big saves. Jack Drabenstott (Dayton, Ohio) found the equalizer in the 73rd minute. William Bernhard (Cincinnati, Ohio) found Drabenstott near the right flank. Drabenstott dribbled towards goal and past a defender and right-footed a shot on goal once inside the penalty box. The game headed to penalty kicks after ending in a draw, where the Orange and Blue lost 4-3.

In the 31st minute of action, Toronto FC took the lead after Gabriel Pellegrino scored off a corner kick. Four minutes later, Toronto once again proved to be dangerous from corner kicks. Hugo Mbongue got behind a cross to the near post and doubled the lead for the hosts. Mauro Lulli scored the final goal for Toronto in the 80th minute. Lulli dribbled past the Orange and Blue’s goalkeeper Beckham Sunderland, then tapped the ball into the open net.

As the ball cruised through the 18-yard box, Caleb Wiley sprinted through the left side of the field to connect with the pass, putting Atlanta ahead in the sixth minute. After a foul on the edge of the 18-yard box, Atlanta was awarded a penalty kick in the 18th minute. Brendan Lambe stepped up to the penalty spot and calmly tucked his shot inside the right post. Steve Rasizzi gave New York City FC the lead in the 14th minute. As FC Cincinnati attempted to clear a long though ball, the ball bounced towards Rasizzi, who tucked the ball inside the left post. Five minutes later, Eligio Guarino doubled NYCFC’s lead. Guarino controlled a lofted cross down with his chest inside the 18-yard box and volleyed a low shot towards goal. Although Austin Wells (Guilford, Ind.) made contact with the shot, the ball slipped through for a goal. After getting fouled in the edge of the offensive third, Nicholas Samways (Loveland, Ohio) lofted a cross towards goal. The ball bounced over to Ryder Mills (West Chester, Ohio), who jumped and kicked the ball towards goal and brought the scoreline closer.

In the 31st minute, Mills received a headed pass from Adal Salinas (Cincinnati, Ohio) and battled his way past Orlando’s backline before tapping the ball towards goal. Orlando took the lead in the 45th minute. The Orange and Blue passed the ball back to their goalkeeper Austin Wells (Guilford, Ind.) in an attempt to avoid pressure from Orlando’s counter-attack.
