2019 Position Breakdown: Goalkeeper

Tytoń

Ahead of FC Cincinnati’s first season in MLS, we’ve created a roster breakdown for each position group.

Here’s a preview of The Orange and Blue’s goalkeeping unit:

Prezemysław Tytoń

Age: 32
Previous club: Deportivo La Coruña (La Liga)

Entering the preseason, Head Coach Alan Koch said one of FCC’s priorities was getting Tytoń minutes in goal. He arrives in Cincinnati having not started a competitive match since Oct. 26, 2017.

With that in mind, Tytoń — also known as “Titi” — started in six of Cincinnati’s seven preseason games and he recorded a clean sheet against the Colorado Rapids. While playing, he looked confident and produced quality saves throughout the club’s trips to Florida and South Carolina.

Getting Tytoń comfortable is critical.

When he’s played regularly, the Polish goalkeeper has played in some of the world’s top leagues and has 14 appearances for his national team, which include three appearances in the UEFA Euro 2012. Before coming to MLS, Tytoń played in the Dutch Eredivisie (PSV), German Bundesliga (VfB Stuttgart) and Spain’s La Liga (Deportivo La Coruña).

2019 Position Breakdown: Goalkeeper -

Spencer Richey

Age: 26

Previous club: Vancouver Whitecaps FC (MLS)

Richey is the lone goalkeeper who played with FC Cincinnati during its stint in the USL. Richey was technically on loan from Vancouver last season.

After rotating for playing time with Evan Newton in early 2018, Richey won the group outright during the summer and helped the Orange and Blue record win the USL regular-season title.

In the offseason, he had hernia surgery but recovered in time to feature for FCC during preseason matches. He made his 2019 debut as a substitute against Indy Eleven on Feb. 12 in a 3-2 loss. His only start was the 1-1 draw with the Chicago Fire in the Carolina Challenge Cup.

2019 Position Breakdown: Goalkeeper -

Jimmy Hague

Age: 22

Previous club: Michigan State (NCAA)

FC Cincinnati selected Hague with the 30th pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft. He arrives at the club as a previous Big Ten Conference Goalkeeper of the Year and one of the best keepers in Michigan State history.

He made one appearance during FCC’s 2019 preseason: 15 minutes in the 1-0 win against the Colorado Rapids.

One of the younger players on the roster, Hague provides depth at goalkeeper and is a rotational option behind Tytoń and Richey.
