FC Cincinnati have acquired $950,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) from the New York Red Bulls in exchange for midfielder Frankie Amaya. The Orange and Blue will receive $500,000 in GAM in 2021 and $450,000 in GAM in 2022.

Should Amaya meet certain performance-based metrics, FC Cincinnati could receive up to an additional $125,000 in General Allocation Money. In addition, FC Cincinnati will receive a percentage of any future transfer fee should New York transfer Amaya outside of MLS.

“It is always difficult to make these types of decisions as we part ways with one of our first MLS players,” General Manager Gerard Nijkamp said. “With that said, this move represents great value and ultimately provides greater flexibility as we continue to improve our roster. We wish Frankie all the best in the next phase of his career.”

Amaya, 20, was FC Cincinnati’s first-ever MLS SuperDraft pick, selected first overall in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft. In two seasons with the Orange and Blue, the midfielder from Santa Ana, Calif., made 40 appearances, including 36 starts, scoring one goal.

Amaya made his MLS debut against Philadelphia Union on March 30, 2019, replacing Allan Cruz in the second half. He scored his first professional goal against Atlanta United FC on July 16, 2020, during the MLS is Back Tournament.

FC Cincinnati return to the pitch on Saturday, April 24, when the team visits Yankee Stadium to face New York City FC. FCC will officially open their 2021 home slate on Sunday, May 16, when the team hosts Inter Miami CF in the inaugural match at West End Stadium in a nationally televised 4 p.m. game.
